Laxmi Prasad Devkota's famous lyrical poem Muna Madan written in Jhyaure Metre is very popular masterpiece of Nepali literature. It is famous not only among educated people but also among the illiterate villagers all over Nepal. It is widely read among the ever written books in Nepali. The main characters of the book are Muna and Madan. Muna is wife and Madan is husband. They are poor. Madan goes to Tibet to cam money. On the way to return home, Madan becomes sick. It shows the contemporary social reality of Nepal. Madan is left on the way and a Sherpa takes care of him. He recovers and comes to Nepal. But by that time Muna dies and Madan remains alone so it is a tragedy. Devkota creates a memorable line here as, "Man becomes great by heart, not by birth."
The story of Muna Madan touches the heart of the readers. They have great sympathy to the hero and heroine. It reveals the social conditions of Nepali poor class people and their compulsion to go abroad to earn some money. I like the book very much due to its real depiction of Nepali social life. It is a social realistic text. I recommend all the Nepali people to read this book once in life.
